Sound:
Sound is a mechanical wave. It is propagated through a medium such as air by means of wave motion. Science of sound is also known as acoustics. Modern acoustics deals with all sorts of sounds which have no relation to the human ear.
Acoustics applications are different, they are
1) Study of sound waves in closed rooms – Architectural acoustics
2) Use of sound in sea for the detection of vessels and exploration of sea bed – underwater acoustics
3) Technology of sound production and recording, study of vibrations of solids and their control as well as noise control- Engineering acoustics
4) The physical of musical instruments – musical acoustics
5) Use of sound in medical diagnosis and therapy - Bio-acoustics/medical acoustics
CLASSIFICATION OF SOUND:
Sound is almost a mechanical wave. It is propagated through a medium such as air by means of wave motion.
The sound waves can be classified based on their frequency:
1) Infrasonic – sound frequency less than 20 HZ
2) Sonic – sound frequency having range between 20 HZ and 20 KHZ
3) Ultrasonic – frequency more than 20 KHz
Audible (sonic) sound can be further classified as
1) Musical sound
2) Noise
Musical sound:
The sound produces a pleasing effect or sensation on the ear is called musical sound
Noise:
The sound producing displeasing (irritating) effect or sensation on the ear is called a noise
Characteristic of musical sound:
There are totally three characteristic of musical sound
1) Pitch or frequency
2) Loundness or intensity
3) Quality or timbre
